WASHINGTON DC: Over 50 neighbors in Ward 5 are going solar together in an effort to take advantage of a group discount organized by DC Solar United Neighborhoods (DC SUN). By going solar as a group, participants in the bulk purchase program save up to approximately 30% off the typical cost of installing solar systems on their homes. And, they build community in the process.
By going through the solarization process together, the homeowners of Ward 5 were able to get a much lower price on going solar. They worked with local nonprofit DC SUN, who provided unbiased technical support and guided the group through the entire process. DC SUN issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) on behalf of the group to solicit competitive bids from local installers.
Ten volunteers from the group of participating homeowners formed a committee to choose an installer for the whole group. The Ward 5 Committee reviewed the bids provided by local installers and selected a single company, Virginia-based GreenBrilliance, to complete all of the installations for Ward 5. Each participant will own their individual system and will sign their own customized contract with the company.
GreenBrilliance is a vertically integrated solar photovoltaic company. Headquartered in Sterling, VA, GreenBrilliance is focused on making solar affordable for homeowners by passing on the savings that result from their tightly secured supply chain.
“We’re excited to be the solar installer for the Ward 5 neighborhood bulk purchase program,” says Operations Manager for GreenBrilliance, Neelam Kataria. “We believe that an educated customer is the best customer, we are very pleased to be chosen after careful consideration by the selection committee.”
Anya Schoolman, President of DC SUN, says the bulk purchase is a win-win solution for encouraging solar in the District:
“Going solar as part of a group has the advantage of making the solarization process much easier to navigate. Participants can rely on the expertise of the group and save money. This is our fourth bulk purchase in DC this year and we have been blown away by all of the interest among homeowners.”
The Ward 5 group is still open for more people to join! To sign up, start your own neighborhood bulk purchase or to join one of the others already underway, go to http://www.dcsun.org/bulk-purchases/. DC SUN relies on community volunteers to lead the local organizing aspects of the group-buy process. For more information contact email@example.com.
DC SUN is also working with community members in Petworth, Mt. Pleasant, and Wards 3, 6, and 7. The group is available to help anyone organize a bulk purchase for their neighborhood.
